What Should I Wear to a Color Analysis? How to Prepare
You’ve booked your professional color analysis—now what?
One of the most common questions clients have before their appointment is what should I wear to a color analysis?
The good news is that preparing for your appointment is simple. Your color analysis is focused primarily on how different colors interact with your natural complexion, so you don’t need to buy anything special or spend hours getting ready.
Here’s how to prepare so your analyst can get the clearest look at your natural coloring.
What Should I Wear to a Color Analysis?
Wear whatever you’re comfortable in!
During an in-person color analysis, a white cape is placed over your clothing and color drapes are place directly beneath your face. Because your clothing will be covered during the analysis, the color of your shirt generally isn’t important.
A comfortable top with a simple neckline is a great choice.
There’s no need to dress up for your appointment. You’ll spend much of the session focusing on the draping process and watching how different colors affect your complexion.
Should I Wear Makeup to My Color Analysis?
For the most accurate results, arrive with a clean, makeup-free face.
Foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, lipstick, and other complexion products can change how your skin appears and may interfere with your analyst’s ability to see how different colors are interacting with your natural coloring.
If going somewhere without makeup feels uncomfortable, remember that your color analysis is a judgment-free experience. I’m not evaluating your skin—I’m evaluating the how colors interact with your natural features.
Seeing your natural complexion allows me to observe changes in things like skin clarity, redness, shadows, under-eye darkness, and overall harmony as we move through the drapes.
Once we determine your season, we can talk about makeup colors that complement your palette.
What About Skincare?
Your normal skincare routine is fine.
You can arrive wearing your usual moisturizer and sunscreen. The goal isn't to have completely bare, untreated skin; we simply want to avoid products that noticeably alter the color of your complexion.
If you use a tinted moisturizer, tinted sunscreen, bronzing drops, or another product that adds pigment to the skin, it's best to skip it on the day of your appointment.
Can I Have a Color Analysis With Dyed Hair?
Absolutely.
You do not need to grow out your natural hair color before having a professional color analysis.
Hair color can influence the overall impression of your coloring, so during the analysis dyed hair can be covered when necessary. This allows the focus to remain on your complexion and your natural response to color.
If you know your natural hair color or have older photos showing it, that information can also be helpful—but your current hair color doesn't prevent you from having an accurate analysis.
Should My Hair Be Up or Down?
You don't need a special hairstyle for your appointment.
Because the focus is on your complexion, your hair may be pulled away from your face or covered during portions of the analysis. I'll have all the tools we need to pull back or cover your hair if needed. You're hair can come down when we go through your best colors.
Come with your hair however you normally wear it.
Can I Wear Glasses or Contacts?
Yes.
If you wear glasses every day, bring them with you. We may remove them during portions of the draping process so the frames don't influence how we're evaluating color near your face.
Contacts are generally fine.
Once your palette has been determined, your coloring can even help guide future choices for eyeglass frames.
What About Jewelry?
You don't need to worry about coordinating your jewelry with your appointment.
Jewelry can be removed during the analysis when needed so it doesn't influence the comparison between drapes.
Your analysis may also help you understand which metal tones—such as silver or gold—are especially harmonious with your coloring.
Can I Get a Color Analysis If I Have a Tan?
Yes.
You don't need to wait for a natural tan to completely fade before scheduling your color analysis. A natural tan will not effect your color analysis results.
A tan changes the surface appearance of your skin, but your analyst is evaluating much more than whether your complexion currently looks lighter or darker.
If you regularly use self-tanner, spray tans, or bronzing products, however, ask your analyst about their preference before your appointment. Because these products can artificially alter the apparent tone of the skin, you may be asked to allow them to fade before your analysis.
Should I Get My Hair Colored Before My Appointment?
If you're considering a major hair-color change, I'd actually recommend having your color analysis first when possible.
Understanding your undertone, value, and intensity can give you useful information when choosing a flattering hair color.
Instead of changing your hair and then trying to determine which colors work with it, you'll have a better understanding of the colors that naturally harmonize with you.
Should I Bring Anything to My Color Analysis?
You don't need to bring your entire closet!
Most of what we need for your analysis is already in the studio.
However, depending on your appointment and the questions you'd like answered, you may want to bring a few items you're curious about.
For example:
A lipstick you wear frequently
A piece of jewelry you're unsure about
Eyeglass frames
A favorite clothing color
Something you've always wondered whether it actually suits you
These aren't necessary for determining your season, but they can make the experience even more useful and personalized.
What Happens When I Arrive?
Your appointment isn't a test, and you don't need to know anything about color analysis beforehand.
We'll begin by talking briefly about the process and what we're looking for.
Then we'll use professional drapes to compare colors directly beneath your face.
As we move through the draping process, I'll explain what I'm seeing so you can begin recognizing the differences too.
We'll look at how colors affect things like:
Skin clarity
Redness and discoloration
Shadows
Definition
Brightness
Overall harmony
From there, we'll narrow down the characteristics that are most flattering on you and determine your seasonal palette.
The goal isn't simply for me to tell you your season.
I want you to understand why your colors work.
