Can I get a Color Analysis with a Tan?
Summer vacations, pool days, and weekends outside can give you a beautiful summer tan—and if you have a color analysis coming up, you may be wondering: Do I need to wait for my tan to fade?
If your tan is from the sun, the answer is no.
A natural tan does not change your natural coloring. Your undertone, depth, and intensity remain part of your natural color characteristics, which means you can still receive accurate color analysis results with a natural tan.
There is one important exception: spray tans and self-tanners.
A Natural Tan vs. a Self-Tan
During a professional color analysis, I’m looking at how different colors interact with your natural coloring. Three of the characteristics I evaluate are:
Undertone: whether your coloring is warmer or cooler
Depth: how light or deep your natural coloring is
Intensity: whether you are best complemented by brighter, clearer colors or softer, more muted ones
Spending time in the sun may deepen the appearance of your skin, but it doesn’t replace your natural undertone or fundamentally change the characteristics we’re evaluating.
So if you naturally tan easily, there is no reason to wait until your skin becomes lighter before having your color analysis.
Why Self-Tanner Can Affect a Color Analysis
Spray tans and self-tanning products are different because they add an artificial layer of color to the skin.
Depending on the product, a self-tanner may make the skin appear warmer, more golden, more orange, deeper, or even more muted than it naturally is. That added color can temporarily disguise the natural undertone, depth, and intensity I need to evaluate.
Because color analysis is based on observing your natural coloring, this can lead to inaccurate results.
For the most accurate analysis, I recommend allowing spray tans and self-tanners to fade completely before your appointment.
What If I Like to Stay Naturally Tan Year-Round?
Come exactly as you are!
You do not need to be pale to receive an accurate color analysis.
Whether your skin is naturally very fair, tan, olive, medium, deep, or somewhere in between, the goal isn't to make your skin look a certain way before your appointment. The goal is to see your natural coloring clearly and determine which colors create the most harmony with it.
Can I Get a Color Analysis After Vacation?
Yes! If your tan came naturally from being outdoors, you don't need to postpone your appointment just because your skin is a little deeper than it was a few weeks ago.
However, if you used a spray tan or self-tanning product before or during your trip, give it time to completely fade before your session.
The Bottom Line
Natural suntan? You're good to go.
Spray tan or self-tanner? Let it fade first.
Your natural tan does not change the underlying characteristics that make your coloring uniquely yours. Artificial tanning products, however, can temporarily mask those characteristics and make an accurate analysis more difficult.
