Soft Summer? Nope.
When a Soft Summer Turns Out to Be a True Autumn
One of the most common things I hear during a color analysis session is, "I've always thought I was a different season."
That's exactly what happened with a recent client who arrived convinced she was a Soft Summer. Like many people, she had spent time looking at online color analysis content, comparing herself to seasonal palettes, and trying to determine her best colors on her own.
As we began the draping process, however, a different story started to emerge.
Professional color analysis is about observing how different colors interact with your natural features. During an in-person session, I evaluate how each drape affects the skin, eyes, facial contours, and overall harmony of the face. The goal isn't to choose colors we personally like—it's to identify the colors that naturally enhance a person's appearance.
As we moved through the draping process, my client began noticing changes for herself. The neutral, muted colors associated with the Soft Summer palette were making her complexion appear less vibrant. Her features seemed dull and less defined.
When we introduced warm, rich, earthy colors, everything changed.
Her skin appeared healthier and more radiant. Her eyes became more noticeable. The overall effect was balanced, natural, and harmonious. The colors weren't taking away from her—they were supporting her.
By the end of the analysis, it became clear that she wasn't a Soft Summer at all.
She was a True Autumn.
The most interesting part of the session was that she recognized it before I officially confirmed her season. As she looked in the mirror during the draping process, she could see the difference for herself. Once we reached the final conclusion, she laughed and said she had been wrong about being a Soft Summer.
This experience highlights one of the biggest challenges with self-typing. Many people identify with a season based on a few characteristics such as hair color, eye color, or skin overtone. While those features can provide clues, they don't tell the whole story.
Two people may have similar hair and eye colors but belong to completely different seasons. The determining factor is how color interacts with the individual as a whole.
That's why professional draping remains the most accurate method for identifying your season. Rather than relying on photos, quizzes, or assumptions, we can observe the real-time effects that different colors have on your appearance.
For this client, discovering her True Autumn palette opened up a completely new way of thinking about clothing, makeup, and personal style. Instead of trying to make Soft Summer colors work, she now has a clear understanding of the warm, rich shades that naturally complement her features.
If you've ever wondered whether you've identified your season correctly, you're not alone. Sometimes the colors you think should work aren't actually your best colors. A professional color analysis can provide clarity and confidence, helping you build a wardrobe that feels cohesive, flattering, and uniquely you.
